Proton, a Malaysian automaker, has just unveiled its Inspira sedan after a sneak peak show last month. The Proton Inspira is pretty much a re-badged Mitsubishi Lancer sedan but with a few modifications to serve the Malaysian market.
Actually, the Proton Inspira sedan looks more robust and powerful than the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan sold in the U.S. We can see the modifications in the signature Proton grille, front bumper and hood. And underneath the hood, the Proton Inspira is equipped with two choices of a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter MIVEC engines from Mitsubishi. In addition, the 2.0-liter MIVEC engine is available with the CVT transmission.
As Dato’ Sri Mohd Nadzmi Mohd, the Chairman of Proton parent corporation Proton Holdings Berhad, explains,”PROTON is ready to move even further ahead to become a recognized player in the global automotive industry. We have been working and collaborating with Mitsubishi for the last 25 years and its a natural step forward for us to continue to work with them in this project. One of our product strategy is to introduce non-core models through strategic collaborations which provides a more efficient, timely, and cost effective product to the market. The Proton Inspira is an excellent example of this strategic collaboration.”
All and all, the Proton Inspira is basically another Mitsubishi Lancer that looks a bit better with a few tweaks. We hate to rain on anybody’s parade, but any aftermarket manufacturer can do same.
